Handsome Johnny

I tried to lie. I tried to cheat. I tried to find a life on easy street.
Throw me a bone I'll pick it. I'll take the cake and eat every piece.
And I can't deny, both day and night, I tried to woo my bride to be.
Lost where none could find me, blind, so blind I could not see
When she said, "Johnny you're so handsome. Johnny will you please marry me."

I was high, still on my feet. There was no high horse under me.
Until that woman came around, she dropped me down on my knees.
I was high, not high and mighty, not high and dry, not in too deep.
She untied my heartstring, hung me by the thread hanging me
When she said, "Johnny you're so handsome. Johnny will you please marry me."

She passed me by to be the bride of some man other than me.
Humble pie, do or die, it's an eye for an eye indeed,
-Easy come, easy go, a slice of crow in the den of thieves.
No need to cry myself to sleep, but every night she fills my dreams.
And she says, "Johnny you're so handsome. Johnny will you please marry me."
Yes she says, "Johnny you're so handsome. Johnny will you please marry me."

Come What May

The cat and mouse that play together stay together everyday
-Pincushion paw, soft touch and all, pushing on you in your face,
Pushing you to find your place, back up all against the wall.
I put both feet down on the ground. I took a second look around,
But what might happen, well, I cannot say.

One hand well and able laying cards down on the table
And swearing things upon the Bible as the cradle sways.
Back seat driver, cloak and dagger, dirty bath water-just let the babies play.
40 days and 40 dollars, getting paid by the hour,
But what might happen, well, I cannot say.

Shotgun wedding shotgun shells, chewing down on fingernails,
Thinking back to the sweeter smell of roses in the rain…
Be-all-end-all magic eight ball, trying to run before you crawl,
Three steps and then you fall-just let the music play.

I cannot speak for my brother, cannot tell one from the other,
And what may happen, well, I cannot say.

Lilly of the Valley

Oh now really Miss Lilly, do I do well to know my place?
And you, you have the nerve to tell me to wipe the smile right off my face.

Oh now really Miss Lilly does your soul not need a mate?
And in the night you dare to tell me, the bright morning star lights your way.

Oh now really Miss Lilly, why must you be on your way?
If one kiss is all you'll give me, the fairest of ten thousand I'd forsake.

Oh now really Miss Lilly would you will my heart to break?
How long must I wait for you, sweet Lilly? Oh you know the hour is getting late.

Oh now really Miss Lilly must we lie here wide-awake?
If only I could draw you near me, I could show you a brand new day.

So I say, sweet Lilly, sad little weeping Lilly,
My Lilly of the Valley, I could show you a brand new day.

Sleeping Beauty

Sleeping beauty, tell me what's on your mind.
Sleeping beauty, let me look into your eyes.

Sleeping beauty, time to rise and shine.
Sleeping beauty, let me look into your eyes.
Do these troubles mean that we must say goodbye?
I need to know if you are still by my side.

I was dreaming of love and of your smile.
Did I ask too much for you to walk down that aisle?
All those bells and whistles running circles round my mind
-Oh what I would not have done to have you by my side.

I see smoke even though there is no firelight,
And so from an ember of hope I will rise.
And though the rain may pour down from the sky,
It will not wash me away from your side.

Sleeping beauty, time to rise and shine.
Sleeping beauty, let me look into your eyes.

I can't walk on water. I've no wings to fly.
But I can see forever when you are by my side.

All in Good Time

Springtime showers flatter flowers to ripen on the vine.
They scratch an itch an itch to scratch to catch a ray of light
From seed to stem and root to limb they wish they may they might,
And dreams come in bloom, like me and you, all in good time.

I took my woman down by the river and she waved goodbye.
I prayed she'd be back by my side, all in good time.

The handsome man he caught your eye, a diamond ring to shine,
But that shine will fade from sight, all in good time.

Best get your things together, best you run and you hide,
He'll take what's yours like she took mine, all in good time.

Ain't it a high tide and high time for the blind to lead the blind
We can find out how to reach the light, all in good time.

Time was made for taking, waiting for the light,
and love is for the making, and love will come, all in good time.

Skin Deep

Grace is amazing, and wonders never cease.
But seeing and believing just ain't the same two things.
Your beauty is beholding and is as it does, indeed.
But it's an easy row to hoe, cause it only goes skin deep.

Grace is amazing and sweeter in the by and by.
And love is worth saving when it is too young to die.
Spiteful and worrisome, knowing what I should do,
I'd bite on your tongue and take more than I can chew.

Oh woe is me…I have been here waiting for you to be my woman
Even though I know that you are gone.
Yes, I have been here waiting for you to be my woman
When I could have been moving on.

Tried and True

One last time now baby blue: Did you mean to bite the hand that's been a feeding you?
Tell me again and tell me true: Did you mean to lick the boot that's been a kicking me, too?

Fig leaves and Gardens of Eden, tongue-tied, tried and true,
Speak like the devil and he comes, he comes around for me and you.

Taking what is forbidden, tastes too good to be true,
Taking sides on these questions leaves what's left for me and you.

Walking miles in your shoes and doing as you say not as you do,
Trying to pick and choose, oh to find the way that's tried and true.

Oh now my-my, what's the light you're a looking through?
What'cha say, what'cha do, and what's the use a looking through your baby blues.
Oh the sunshine in those eyes was all I knew
Back once upon a time, my love, light came from you.

Lo and Behold

Too many faces and too few friends, too far gone to start again,
Best call up your kin and then head on home.
Leave to hope what you're holding on for troubled times are drawing near.
You can hear the old folks saying "Lo and behold-all we've got today may be gone tomorrow."

Oh sweet love, go put your best dress on; we might find somewhere to go.
Come on close, and let your hair hang low-all we've got today may be gone tomorrow.

Turning round nice and slow, everybody comes and goes.
And in my soul, I know-all we've got today may be gone tomorrow.

Rolling stone going where you will, rolling head over heels,
Guess you had your fill of watching the river flow.

Too many faces and too few friends, too far gone to start again,
Do you remember when you first left home?
Now all we've got today may be gone tomorrow.
Yeah, all we've got today may be gone tomorrow.

Higher Ground

Four-leaf clover in my hand and turning over
-They say nothing ever lasts forever and good luck will surely fade away.
Even still, I'm getting bolder, growing older in my own way
-A little salt over my shoulder never hurt me anyway.

Over yonder they say that the grass grows three shades greener.
Leaving faith altogether, watch them sinners walk away.
Oh there's blue sky down by the river and sunny weather everyday,
But higher hope in muddy water never hurt me anyway

Four-leaf clover in my hand and turning over
They say nothing ever lasts forever and good luck will surely fade away
Rolling over, rolling round in the winds of change
A little salt over my shoulder never hurt me anyway

And I will come around before it's too late
I'll put a good foot down on higher ground and then fly away

Hallelujah Fly Away

Lights on, but no one is home-Hallelujah, fly away.
Ring-ring-telephone, but no one is home today.

Sweet song-radio is on-Hallelujah fly away.
Sing along, or listen. But no one listens today.

Mansions made on streets of gold-Hallelujah fly away.
Heaven may take some, and we may come or go today.

Fly high away. You must fly high away.
Fly high away. Hallelujah, fly away.

Just As I Am

Of myself, I am nothing, nothing on my own,
Oh so lonesome and worried, with nowhere left to go.
Of myself, I am nothing, with nothing more to know.
Ever so softly, I'm calling, "Lover, I have come home."

Forgive me all of my failings, my thoughts that made them so.
I've new hope to believe in, and bid farewell to the old.
Gingerly, Love, I come calling with nowhere left to go
Oh so lonesome and worried, Lover, I have come home.

So roll with me gently. Closer, Love, hold me. I am ready to be shown.
